ok so back to the moon thing, i found another resource and i think i understand the why behind the asinine coordinate systems a little better but it also glosses over the math so it's kinda useless at the same time. i'm tempted to just make shit up and move on, but it would bother me that the function was wrong if i did that
@aeva This is why we threw our hands up and said, just use what's already been done. We outsource "where are the space things" to NAIF SPICE: https://naif.jpl.nasa.gov/naif/aboutspice.html (there's also the rust rewrite, ANISE, but we don't trust that at my place of work yet)

@aeva I think part of it is we stopped trying to guess based on date and moved to measurements and short term extrapolation

@squirrelbaffler it occurred to me that this is one of those situations where one would probably normally use a library, but the problem is I need to prioritize speed over accuracy because it's repeatedly invoked in a real time audio thread, a use case which i'd not expect to be shared by serious scientific or industrial use cases

astronomy math is out of this fucking world btw like want to know where the moon is? great buckle up you're in for a few hundred years of bizarre hacks and lots of exciting questions like "wait, why are they using the julian calendar?"
@aeva at least now we have the J2000 epoch, which kiiiiinda hides away a bit of the old cruft... but yeah, it's pretty wild.
On the other hand, thanks to these whacky calendar conversions they can apparently use observations made by Chinese astronomers 2000 years ago, so hey, maybe they have a point

Sempre riguardo al discutere tramite post su un social: stavo pensando ad una pratica abbastanza comune che a me sembra molto maleducata, ma spesso non è percepita come tale.
Intendo, quando si cita parte di un testo o direttamente uno o più libri per sostenere la propria tesi.
Per esempio "come c'è scritto nel libro tale". Oppure: "leggiti questo, questo e questo libro!"
Da un lato citare le fonti è sempre una buona cosa, dall'altro un post così uccide di fatto la discussione: tutti quelli che non hanno ancora letto il libro/articolo/testo in questione dovranno trovare il modo di leggerlo e capirlo per poter argomentarne le tesi in modo serio.
D'altro canto il fatto che una cosa sia scritta da qualcuno in un libro non la rende automaticamente vera, neppure nel caso che la fonte portata sia una pubblicazione scientifica, è un elemento a sostegno della propria tesi ma non necessariamente definitivo.
Inoltre il mezzo (discussione via post su un social) di per sè si presta poco all'approfondimento necessario a discutere nel dettaglio le fonti.
Quindi, a mio parere, quando per sostenere le proprie ragioni si mette sul tavolo una mezza biblioteca, quello che si sta facendo è bloccare di fatto la discussione in un modo anche piuttosto villano verso l'interlocutore, che si vede costretto o a leggere tutta la mezza biblioteca o a ladciar perdere e chiudere lì.
Il comportamento corretto sarebbe dire, per esempio: "io la penso in questo modo [breve riassunto sintetico delle proprie opinioni, che dimostra che oltre ad aver letto la mezza biblioteca ti sei fatto anche un'idea tua e la sai esporre]" eventualmente sotto si riportano come riferimento le fonti sulla base delle quali ci si è formata un'opinione.
In questa maniera l'altra persona non è costretta a leggere tutta la letteratura proposta per poter rispondere nel merito, però se ne ha voglia può leggerla.
