Good morning Fedi friends and happy Saturday!

  • Good morning Fedi friends and happy Saturday! 🌈

    File under: I'm such a clown sometimes. I did something extremely foolish yesterday (installation-wise) that bricked my whole YunoHost with Sharkey instance. This is not the fault of YunoHost or Sharkey, it's just me being the biggest airhead.

    So this morning I nuked that VPS (Hetzner makes it so easy to start and stop) and, armed with a stopwatch, I wanted to see how long it would take me to order a new server, log in, install YunoHost and set up a main URL and a subdomain to log in.

    I had this unique challenge that we're going hiking in the mountains so my time is very limited this morning.

    How long did it take me? A grand total of 14 minutes.

    The perks of being a fool is that you repeat the steps so many times that you go from being terrified (what do I have to do now?) to just sailing through the steps.

    Time went like this:

    1m30s: logged onto Hetzner, ordered a new server (Debian v12)

    4m50s in: logged in, increased security, ran apt update and apt upgrade

    5m in: installed YunoHost (thanks #curl)

    7m30s in: with YunoHost successfully installed, I got into their beautiful graphical interface to continue the post install

    9m30s in: post installation complete

    11m 20s in: began tweaking DNS records for the main domain and the logging in subdomain, installed certificates, etc.

    14m23s = all done, tripled checked that everything is working in incognito mode (it is) 🥳

    Wishing you all a great day. Time to go hiking for me and my fam 🗻

    @elena Some time ago I accepted the vision of the world, where mistakes are not something to be punished for or called fool for. They are simply part of the learning process. They help me learn about things. They give me important feedback. Yes it hurts sometimes, but it's a temporary feeling :)

    I really like how you share the whole self hosting journey and I admire you for diving into it.

    Have a great day and enjoy the hike!

    @elena
    Have you tried backing up and restoring ?
    That kinda stuff may be worth having on your agenda some day ;-)

    @olberger I routinely back stuff up through their interface but I bricked things so badly that I couldn’t access the admin via their graphical interface.

    Figured it would be quicker to nuke everything and start over (than going through terminal).

    That installation was basically 30 min old and I didn’t have anything important on it. Just a fresh install of Sharkey 😅

    @elena You may investigate backing up on remote servers, and restoration... at a later point. Good luck, and please, keep sharing your journey

    @olberger yes yes I know and I’m typically much more cautious and take snapshots before starting critical jobs.

    This was a fresh installation on a test VPS so I was a little too cavalier about things.

    Never in a million years would I do such foolish moves on a VPS hosting important tools. But hey the silver lining is that I learned an important lesson and can integrate it into my YunoHost starter guide 😅

    @elena

    Why ordering a new server ?
    Was it not possible to reinstall a fresh distribution on the bricked one ?
    (I am a newbie in VPS)

    @tanavit because I’m the biggest airhead sometimes and I didn’t take a snapshot of the instance before attempting to install Sharkey 🤦🏻‍♀️

    in my defense I was in a rush and it was a test VPS with a fresh installation of YunoHost so I didn’t have much at stake. Easier to just wipe it and start over… 🥲
