Every server deployment on Amazon's AWS, Google's GCP and MS Azure feeds the beast.
Not only do they reinforce pathways of centralisation in the topological sense, but they also invest in US supremacy geopolitically. That supremacy now openly includes a theocratic & racist, war-mongering & imperialist movement.
Every server you spin up at home or on a smaller DC, like every abandoned Google, Twitter or FB account, slows the beast down.

I'm not saying "don't buy the US things", rather, don't invest in the enormously powerful planet-engulfing tech corporations that are openly partnering with the current US administration on their hideous projects.

It's here too that without some rigour and vigilance the beast can get fed on the sly. It is great to see folk depopulating BIgTech for small companies providing managed alternatives, a fine start, but don't get cosy until you know who they themselves host with.
Ask them "where will my data be stored?"
Some, many, are hosting on AWS, for instance. So when you move to their shiny new free and open source alternative to toxic tech, you've left the cell but you're still in jail.

@bryan dementia would suck, but I'm hoping they'll have that figured out by the time I get there. They seem to have some pretty good leads. Shingles is strongly linked to cognitive decline, for instance, and I guess the vaccine protects against that.

@swelljoe Iâve never smoked and will not start. Iâm happy to be a healthy dementia patient over an early preventable death.

I'm having a hard time believing in mousy Peggy, after Handmaid's Tale. June would have murdered all these men.

@bryan survivorship bias survives on survivor anecdotes. My grandmother, a lifelong smoker, died when she was about 60 from lung cancer. No dementia, though, she had that going for her. Entirely aware all the way to the end.

My grandmother quit smoking when she was 70-ish. She stated her habit of smoking daily at 12. Anyway, at 70, she was taking care of her mother at the time. Her mother (my great-grandmother) spent the last 10 years of her life with dementia.
The experience made my grandmother decide sheâd rather be dead than âtalk like a foolâ. So she started to smoke again. She passed many years later and never had dementia.
