Progress update no.2 (humble pie edition) 🥧​

So I successfully installed #YunoHost on my #RaspberryPi5 but I could not get to see the graphical interface... I only managed to run commands in Terminal, sigh. Typing the address in a browser just brought up a blank page.

I remembered how easy it was to install YunoHost on my VPS back in December.

I have an unused OVH VPS whose subscription will expire in February. So I reinstalled the OS (switching from Ubuntu to Debian) because YunoHost runs on Debian. I tried installing YunoHost on there and the whole process was so seamless and easy. 5 minutes tops. And I got to their beautiful graphical interface without any problems.

The whole purpose of this exercise is to showcase to "normies" what self-hosting is like with YunoHost. I had my dose of humble pie today because even if installing it on a Raspi is quick and easy, it's still a daunting task for someone who is not a developer IMHO.

Conversely, installing it on a VPS is so seamless, quick and easy.

I have documented the whole thing for my write-up.

Personally I don't like to give up easily, so I will definitely re-try with the Raspberry Pi. But in good conscience I cannot recommend this method for someone who's not advanced... if it makes sense?

Like, if I were to tell my cousin or my friends about it, I'd encourage them to get a VPS instead.

Anyhow, tomorrow is another day and I will re-try from the start.

But now: I have a fresh installation of YunoHost running on my other VPS and I'm so tempted to install #Sharkey, LOL.

@elena when I was installing YunoHost on my Pi for serving stuff to the Internet from my living room I did use vanilla Raspberry PI OS Lite and then used YunoHost script to install the YunoHost on top of it. It worked fine for me! Let me know if you need some help with your YunoPI ;-)

@elena @jan@dytrych.cloud Usually, any linux distribution based on debian should work. Unless they expect specific package versions.

And I would agree with you that self-hosting on a Pi is not beginner friendly but for another reason:

Self-Hosting on a pi, means self-hosting on your own network, if anything goes wrong security wise and someone with bad intentions gets access to the pi, they are in your network. Compared to if they get in the VPS, you might lose data, you might get your vpn banned, but your home network will stay safe.

@antoine_ali indeed. I'm a little afraid of exposing my home network to the outside.

And there's an added thing, which may seem paranoid, but I don't trust having a home machine that's always on and that could overheat while I'm outside.

Last week I narrowly avoided a home fire - an old appliance that wasn't turning on anymore overheated and had the cable melt when I tried a different cable. It made me freak out a little... had I not been near, it could have caught fire.

So I'm a big fan of the idea of a VPS (even if technically it's someone else's server/computer that I'm renting) because of its added safety (physical and network-wise) 😓​

@elena the Raspberry PI OS is debian based and it worked just fine for me! I do recommend using Raspberry Pi Imager https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/, make sure you install Bookworm 64bit lite OS from this link: https://downloads.raspberrypi.com/raspios_oldstable_lite_arm64/images/raspios_oldstable_lite_arm64-2025-10-02/2025-10-01-raspios-bookworm-arm64-lite.img.xz

With Imager you can customize system name, login and enable SSH out of the box.

Progress update no.3 (perseverance edition) 💪​

Several people suggested that I install #YunoHost on my Raspi5 ON TOP of Debian (thank you @jan and @fmors) so I will be trying that tomorrow morning... when my parents are looking after my little one (who's on a 2 week school holiday).

This morning I gave up a little too easily because she was playing nearby and my attention was a little scattered.

But excited to try out this method tomorrow. Thank you Jan & Fernando 🙏​
