Do not trust other parties to have your back - because they don't.However, few words to the wise: if you operate a minimalist setup - eg everything running in VMs on a single host: please do consider the consequences of downtime.You probably don't want to run your critical services on one machine without a fallback. If those services include your smarthome foundation, DNS and firewalling: you don't want to troubleshoot in the dark because everything is down and you can't even turn on the light anymore.You aren't the first nor won't he the last to learn this lesson when disaster strikes though

More and more are realizing that it was a really bad idea to entrust all data to Big Tech. Given that, what do you do now?For many it just means moving to a different hosting service, that is not Big Tech. For others it means hosting yourself. Likely there will be a bit of a combination for many. In any case, this means the need to build up competence in the organization, which IMHO is a good thing.In my old company, Opera, and in my new one @Vivaldi, we always run things that way. Our servers have always been our servers. We may choose to use some external services, but mostly we use our own. Our Vivaldi servers are in Iceland. At Opera, we built significant server farms across the world, including in Iceland, not least for the Opera Mini service. The server farms we built at Opera handled hundreds of millions of users on a monthly basis. The Opera Mini service had billions of daily page views going through it.When some are saying that there is not enough competence to move away from Big Tech, that is really nonsense. @tofu @khleedril /me sits on a rocking chairlisten, young grasshopper, back in my time we didn't have this wordpress thing you're talking about, nevermind nextcloud. back in my time if you wanted to host an homepage you had to write your html by hand, with a dip pen, on parchment, uphill in the snow!ok, I may be mixing up things a bit, but you don't have to be that old to have started self hosting pages when wordpress didn't exist and the alternatives were writing html directly with a text editor or, a few years later, using some kind of graphical editor that saved pretty bad html pages you could load on the server like your handwritten ones.(or you have to be old, and I am old :D )

@michael @jwd630 you can make your own theme, but you'll also have to keep up with Hugo changes and deprecations. Also, it requires knowing the Go templating language.

@as400 In the past I haven't had much luck with setting things in that tab making much of a difference. I just revisited and by bulk setting everything to "good" maybe there is a ~1 W difference if I squint at the averages. "AMD things" perhaps.I think the CPU number in btop correlates to the package power. My thought is that maybe moving from a 95W CPU to a 35W would cut the power in half. That would be ~10W on a 5650GE but not the 3W on a 5825U.Hmm, I think I just talked myself out of that 5650GE in my aliexpress shopping cart. Ha.

@planeguy @aj I think we need to mitigate against centralization there. One way is to have multiple tag servers. tags.pub exists; so does tagpump.app. Other services like surf.social or channel.org use aggregated channels with multiple tags, actors, and other inputs, but they're in the same vein. I'd love love love to see someone take the code we've made and deploy another server, 3, 5, or 7. I'd be happy to help with that process.

@_elena not really self-hosting but could details how once you have a domain name it's easy to use it for emails.It's simple to forward to any provider and then slowly start using your own domain.This make future migration to any provider trivial since you can then just change the domain config.
