  • At Vivaldi we continue to make choices that are different from our competitors.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

At Vivaldi we continue to make choices that are different from our competitors. We have chosen to not integrate AI or crypto, but instead we integrate a wealth of other features, based on the wishes of our users.

We are a European company with most of the team based in Norway and Iceland, a few around Europe and a couple in the US.

Our servers are based in Iceland.

If you want to get away from Big Tech, maybe give us a try? If you are already using Vivaldi, maybe introduce your friends?

    Have a nice day!

  • I recently got a new Thinkpad P14S.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

I recently got a new Thinkpad P14S. It is a nice computer for sure, but I think it is time to focus on the software side as well. Computers come with software and the software experience matters!

Some things I think should be covered in a review:

    1. What OS does the machine come with? Having a choice would be nice, such as a Windows & Linux choice. Even better if you can test both before making a choice.

    2. What software does the machine come with, both good and bad. If the machine comes with useful software, then that is great! Does it offer a choice of browsers?

    3. Is it possible to get rid of all the bad stuff and how long does it take?

    4. Does the machine allow local accounts? Does it force or trick you into using online services?

    5. Does the machine have opt-in or opt-out of AI or does it force feed it?

    6. Does the machine make it easy to switch OS after the fact?

I am sure I am not the only one that cares about stuff like this. When you buy a piece of hardware, it is to run software and making it easy to run the software you want should be what hardware makes should focus on, in addition to building great hardware.

  • Big Tech is getting more and more involved in politics.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

Big Tech is getting more and more involved in politics. During the last US election, Crypto bros spent more than $100 million on the election, which got some of them out of jail. Now Big Tech is active again, this time with focus on AI, as reported in this Washington Post article.

It is time to take a stand against companies that behave this way.

  • The focus for us at @Vivaldi has always been to do what our users want us to do.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

The focus for us at @Vivaldi has always been to do what our users want us to do. So we have spent time on things like:

    - Work spaces and tab stacks
    - Tab tiling
    - Mouse gestures
    - Customizable keyboard shortcuts
    - Tracker and ad blocker
    - Panels and Web panels
    - Cross platform, encrypted sync function
    - Advanced bookmarking function with speed dials
    - Customizable dashboard
    - Massive customization options in general.
    - Notes functionality

We have also added stuff like this in our desktop browser

    - Mail client
    . Calendar
    - Feed reader
    - Proton VPN integration

Not everyone uses everything we make, but that is also the point. The fact that we listen to special requests is IMHO a feature and not a bug. We value power users as well.

On the other hand, we have stayed away from certain things. Things like:

    - Blockchain / Crypto currencies
    - AI

You can find us on Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android and iOS. You can even find us in many cars running Android Automotive.

We are not the largest browser company in the world, but we are dedicated and we are growing. More and more are giving us a try. Have you?

  • Why is Big Tech so afraid of AI regulation?
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

Why is Big Tech so afraid of AI regulation?

Big Tech continues to push for no AI regulation and it is having an impact. They want us to forget the damage done by the lack of regulation of user profiling. Instead they argue that regulating user profiling and AI would be a disaster. Clearly they are having some success with this strategy.

Hopefully regulators will fight back, but in the meantime, you have a choice when it comes to OS and browsers. Choose the one that does not force AI on you.

  • New @Vivaldi on Android as arrived!

New @Vivaldi on Android as arrived!

This one has a much requested feature: custom search engines. This is something we have had on desktop, but it has finally arrived on mobile as well.

What is unique here is that you can take most any search and just long click in the search field and add it from the contextual menu. Think about the specialized searches you do and how convenient this can be for you!

Here is a pro tip for you. For some advanced searches, with multiple elements, you can fill out some of the fields and then add the search. This saves the custom search with those fields pre-filled.

  • If you wanted another reason to dislike crypto currencies and AI, here you go.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

If you wanted another reason to dislike crypto currencies and AI, here you go. Not only do we have to deal with more scams, more slop, less privacy and a warmer planet, but we also have to pay for it through our electrical bills.

Of course this is obvious. More demand for power means higher prices and crypto and AI uses a lot of power.

  • Microsoft is killing Windows 10 and for many countries and users, updates will stop today.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

Microsoft is killing Windows 10 and for many countries and users, updates will stop today. It is time to look for options.

@brucelawson has a suggestion for you. IMHO there are many Linux distributions to choose between and you will need to choose the one that works best for you.

I recently switched to Linux as my primary platform myself.

My plea, however, to the Linux community is to make it easy for people to switch to Linux, but also to make it easy to switch window managers, key chains and the like.

I switched to Ubuntu myself and I am finding certain things with Gnome were a pain. Thus I tried switching to KDE, but found that broke a lot of things. IMHO we should strive to make it easy for users to switch between window managers and desktops as well as applications, without breaking things. That requires the different players to work together to ensure that switching from one desktop to another, for example, does not need to mean loosing passwords.

Locking in is one of the things Big Tech is known for. Linux should not have that, IMHO.

  • I asked Windows 10 users what they were planning to do as Windows 10 stops getting free updates.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

I asked Windows 10 users what they were planning to do as Windows 10 stops getting free updates. The answers may surprise you.

Only 9% plan to move to Windows 11. 1% plan to pay for updates. 22% want to keep using Windows 10, even without security updates. 61% plan to switch to Linux. 6% plan something else.

Obviously this is a survey done here in the Fediverse, but this is quite interesting and could mean more users coming to Linux, which IMHO is a good thing.

I just made the switch and I am quite happy with it. At the same time I always look for improvements and issues to resolve. It is kind of in my blood.

  • As some of you know, I have moved over to Linux.
    jon@social.vivaldi.netundefined jon@social.vivaldi.net

As some of you know, I have moved over to Linux. I have tried different distributions, but using Ubuntu at this time. I have found one issue. When I click links in other apps and they open in Vivaldi, there is a notification that the page is ready, instead of just taking me to the page. Seems to be a generic issue and I have looked and found that there are extensions to get rid of this, but IMHO this should rather be a setting and I would have thought that most users would like for things just to be opened. Any reason why it is done this way? It adds a lot of extra steps that should not be needed.
