A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

We’re back with a fresh release, and this one makes following and sharing smoother than ever—plus gives you more control over how your posts can be quoted.
A New Way to Follow (For Now)
Starting today, users on WordPress.com sites and self-hosted sites connected through Jetpack can see the posts of accounts they follow directly in their WordPress.com Reader timeline. The Following UI has been around for a little while, yet hidden, and with this release it will be enabled by default for these sites.
When you follow an account, ActivityPub checks for a discoverable RSS feed. If one exists, it’s automatically added to your Reader timeline so new posts appear alongside everything else you already follow. Unfollowing works the same way—the feed disappears when you remove the account. And if you’d like to view the feed for an account you’ve followed, just hover over it in the list table and click View Feed.
Think of this as a bridge: a simple way to read the posts of accounts you follow today, while we continue building a full, first-class ActivityPub reading experience for tomorrow.
There are a couple of details to keep in mind. Removing a subscription directly in the Reader won’t update your site’s Following list, and interactions are limited to what RSS allows, which means sharing and reposting rather than the full range of ActivityPub features.
Running a self-hosted site without Jetpack? You can still enable the Following UI manually—it just won’t connect with the Reader.
Quote Post Controls
We’ve also added support for Mastodon’s quote post feature—and given you an easy way to control how others can quote your content.
When writing in the Block Editor, you’ll now see a sidebar setting that lets you decide whether everyone can quote your post, only your followers can, or if quoting is reserved for you alone. Once published, Mastodon and other compatible platforms will honor your choice automatically. No extra setup needed—just write, choose, and publish with confidence.

I sondaggi anonimi su Mastodon sono davvero anonimi? Beh, parliamone...
Riportiamo una sintesi di un post pubblicato un anno fa da @Edent sulla questione dell'anonimato nei sondaggi di Mastodon, ma il post richiama l'attenzione sul fatto che tutto ciò che rende aperto il Fediverso rende necessaria una maggiore consapevolezza da parte degli utenti.
Quando voti in un sondaggio, il tuo server invia un messaggio al server dell'utente che ha creato quel sondaggio dicendo: "Sono l'utente
@XXXX@YYY.ZZe desidero votare per l'opzione X. Ecco una firma HTTP che conferma il mio messaggio."Le specifiche Activitystreams relative ai sondaggi non sono definite benissimo e anche la documentazione di Mastodon è un po' vaga. Nessuno dei due affronta con chiarezza la questione della privacy.
C'è un eccellente post sul blog di @humrochagf (Aprovecho la oportunidad... Hola Humberto, ¿podrías arreglar el enlace a tu cuenta de Mastodon en tu blog?) che analizza il sondaggio Mastodon in ActivityPub. Mostra chiaramente che un voto è solo un normale messaggio che viene trasmesso al server ricevente.
Servizi come Mastodon sono appositamente sviluppati per non permettere all'autore del sondaggio di vedere chi ha votato e per quale opzione.
Ma questa è solo una convenzione. Non c'è nulla di tecnico che impedisca di recuperare quel dato. Se quel dato esiste, allora c'è un modo per intercettarlo. Un server mastodon inaffiddabile o appositamente configurato per raccogliere dati può collegare le tue preferenze al tuo account
Pertanto, quando vedi un sondaggio su Mastodon, poniti sempre queste domande:
1) dichiarare una preferenza in quel sondaggio può danneggiarmi?
2) il server cui appartiene l'utente che lancia il sondaggio rispetta il GDPR oppure è un server extracomunitario? O, peggio, è un server comunitario senza privacy policy o con una privacy policy ricopiata da un altro server?All'esposizione di un qualsiasi dato personale, infatti, corrisponde sempre una riduzione delle proprie difese.
Da chi potrebbe essere sfruttata questa caratteristica?
1) un attore che lo fa attraverso un server malevolo, appositamente configurato per raccogliere quetsi dati
2) un attore che lo fa attraverso un server che ha compromessoPerché qualcuno dovrebbe sfruttare questa caratteristica?
1) per profilare il tuo account anonimo/pseudonimo e renderne più facile l'identificazione
2) per profilare te e il tuo account già correlato alla tua vera identità e colpirti dal punto di vista reputazionale (al tuo datore di lavoro piace avere dipendenti sotto l'attacco di una shitstorm?) o legale (pensa solo a come il governo degli USA sta rendendo illegali opinioni e comportamenti)Se sei interessato a questi contenuti sul #Fediverso puoi seguire l'utente @fediverso; si tratta di un "gruppo activitypub" che simula i gruppi Facebook: quando lo segui, l'account ti ricondivide tutti i messaggi di chi lo menziona! Se vuoi scrivere un post sul Fediverso, ricordati di menzionare quell'utente alla fine del tuo nuovo messaggio

Quali sono i fattori che al momento ostacolano una larga adozione del Fediverso da parte degli utenti?
“Credo che ci siano diversi fattori. Un primo elemento consiste nel fatto che il Fediverso è ancora poco conosciuto al grande pubblico e viene utilizzato per lo più dagli ‘addetti ai lavori’.
Uno degli obiettivi che mi sono posta con questo libro consiste proprio nel far comprendere che esistono delle alternative ai social media commerciali; che queste piattaforme sono federate ed interoperabili e non contemplano logiche di monetizzazione dei dati degli utenti o pratiche di censura e sorveglianza, come avviene nei comuni social media.Il Fediverso offre, infatti, la possibilità di creare istanze gestite direttamente dagli utenti e che si basano sui principi (policy) e sugli interessi della community, formando un ecosistema digitale alternativo. Un altro elemento consiste nel fatto che la gestione di un server richiede competenze tecniche, tempo e risorse economiche che possono limitarne l’uso a coloro che non le possiedono: non tutti gli utenti, infatti, riescono a implementare o a gestire istanze nel lungo periodo.
Un altro fattore che limita l’uso del Fediverso è la cultura che sta dietro i social network commerciali. Il famoso tasto ‘like’ di Facebook o il cuore che si riceve quando si pubblica una foto su Instagram o un video su TikTok provocano un effetto che si potrebbe definire ‘dopaminico’ nell’utente che lo riceve, facendogli vivere un’esperienza positiva che tenderà a ripetere, incrementando l’engagement sulla piattaforma.
Questo processo avviene a discapito di qualsiasi forma di tutela della privacy e del fatto che ogni aspetto della vita degli utenti viene inesorabilmente sempre ‘reso pubblico’. Il Fediverso, rifiutando queste logiche di mercificazione delle identità digitali, potrebbe quindi risultare meno attrattivo per quegli utenti che ormai hanno interiorizzato questo modo di pensare e utilizzare i social media”.Così Giuliana Sorci intervistata da Giuditta Mosca su Guerre di Rete nell'articolo appena pubblicato dal titolo:
La resistenza ai social media riparte dal Fediverso e dai server ribelliUna ricostruzione di internet “dal basso” per combattere le aziende che mercificano i dati personali. Un libro(Server ribelli) teorizza il fediverso come campo base per l’attivismo digitale."

Le timeline sono giustamente vuote, il deserto più completo. È una esperienza deludente, perché non c'è il cameriere (algoritmo) che ti porta da mangiare. Occorre capire che il cameriere sei tu e quindi c'è da fare uno sforzo nel cercare e preparare i pasti in base al proprio appetito. Nel Fediverso non si è serviti, ci si serve da soli. -

Twice in the past fews days, I've gotten a reply from a Mastodon user complaining that I should have put the direct link to an article.
- On Lemmy I posted the direct link to the article as usual
- On their Mastodon feed, I appear as a Mastodon user that posted a link to a Lemmy thread
It seems that threadiverse posts are being seen by more mastodon users now, which is great, but maybe the formatting could use some improvements?
The complaints:
I know Mastodon got "quote posts" recently, is that related to this change?
Is Mastodon also getting a "group" view? That might be the best solution to the problem
