It has been nagging me a lot, but I finally decided to shut down my Pixelfed server.
There are several reasons. Here are the ones off the top of my mind.
Pixelfed governance is unclear and its maintenance is spotty and obscure. The project has no clear roadmap and it all feels very off. Even though I was enthusiastic about @PixelfedGlitch, it still seems like this fork is not attracting enough interest and participation to establish a forward-looking plan.
I don’t want to maintain a whole instance merely for a single profile—especially after it has been inactive for a long while. Friends and folks who are curious and interested in exploring the Fediverse are welcome to join pan.rent, that is a collective, communal, and cosy instance.
I am having trouble with the pixelfed_ynh package for YunoHost. PHP dependencies are a mess and services constantly fail. I believe it’s not the fault of YunoHost packaging, but I am no expert, just a feeling. No energy and not worth figuring it out. I tried for a while, I gave up.
I am generally against the idea of having multiple Fediverse accounts on multiple servers for different uses. Instead, I believe we should improve filtering and sorting posts depending on their type, and having one single account linked to one identity. Overall, Mastodon Glitch Edition does the job for my occasional image and video posting, even if it’s not optimal.
I want to use the domain https://tmi.pics for a different purpose, probably an Immich server.
Now, a question for all the sysads out there: what are the best practices you recommend before shutting the server down? I have a strong emotional attachment to the ~15 pictures and posts I have on my profile there.
What I am doing, so far:
saving all Web pages of profiles and posts on the Wayback Machine
performing and archiving a YunoHost backup of the application

Se hai preso questa decisione sei già a buon punto, ma se ti va puoi leggere anche questo articolo, in cui spiegavo perché dovresti entrare nel Fediverso. Ti aiuterà per capire meglio il Fediverso e anche questo articolo. Ma permettimi di ricordare velocemente i vari punti che toccavo:
Che i social media tradizionali come Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Tiktok stanno avvelenando il web con una logica di marketing che pur di fare soldi non si ferma davanti a nulla.
Il Fediverso è un’alternativa reale a tutto questo perché non è accentrato nelle mani di un unico padrone, ma è l’insieme di tanti social network piccoli nelle mani di persone come me e te.
Facebook e gli altri accentrano: vuoi usare la mia piattaforma? Devi iscriverti regalandomi i tuoi dati, la tua vita. Facebook è unico, come Youtube, Tiktok, e gli altri. Vuoi accedere a quei social per socializzare? Devi fare un account per ogni social, e all’interno vedrai solo i contenuti di quel social network.
Il Fediverso è l’esatto opposto: decentrato, libero da padroni anche nel suo codice di programmazione. Non c’è un padrone che impone la sua convenienza, perciò le persone – questa volta davvero – hanno un peso che è identico per ognuna, non lo decide l’algoritmo.
Per tutti i motivi qui sopra e altri, il Fediverso è un’alternativa concreta e etica alla “merdificazione di internet“.
Bene, ora che sei consapevole di tutto questo, e spero sarai d’accordo con me, è arrivato il momento: entriamo nel Fediverso.
Come si fa? Beh, anzitutto dovrai scegliere uno dei tanti social network che lo costituiscono; e come fare a decidere? Come nel mondo dei social commerciali, esistono tanti social quante sono le “funzioni”, gli usi tipici o gli argomenti che l’utente vuole fare o trattare.
Ecco alcuni dei social del Fediverso, quelli che sentirai nominare più spesso, riassunti in questa tabella.

Ce ne sono altri, ma questi sono (secondo me) i più diffusi e quelli con cui potresti avere a che fare presto.
A quale iscriversi, dunque? Prima di questa domanda occorre chiarire una cosa: visto che il Fediverso è un insieme di tanti social network gestiti da istituzioni, volontari, (poche) aziende e persone normalissime come me e te, devi tenere presente che se vuoi iscriverti a Mastodon non ti iscriverai “a Mastodon”, perché Mastodon è solo un software! Ti iscriverai invece ad una istanza di Mastodon, cioè una delle tantissime installazioni di Mastodon che qualcuno nel mondo ha deciso di metterti a disposizione (grazie!).
Chiarito questo, ora sì che possiamo porci “la domanda”: ma a cosa mi devo iscrivere, quindi?
Il bello del Fediverso è proprio che da un punto di vista tecnico non importa, perché da qualunque istanza potrai vedere i post degli amici che postano su qualsiasi altra istanza.
Da un punto di vista pratico, però, non ti consiglio di andare “a caso”.
Il mio consiglio è di valutare 2 cose: qual è il tuo scopo principale per stare nel Fediverso (condividere foto, pensieri corti, pensieri lunghi?).
In base a questo, io ti consiglio di valutare Pixelfed per le foto, Mastodon per i pensieri corti, Friendica per i pensieri lunghi.
Se ti fidi di me ti consiglio, per iniziare, di provare con Mastodon: è la tecnologia più facile da comprendere. In alternativa, Friendica.
Lascerei gli altri tipi di social per un secondo momento (a parte che potrai comunque usarli in buona parte con il tuo account di Mastodon/Friendica, ma magari lo vediamo in un altro articolo!).
Bene, la scelta non finisce qui: perché in ognuno dei social che ho citato vedrai sempre: – post di account “locali” (non in senso geografico, ma account di persone che appartengono al tuo stesso server). – post del “resto del mondo”:
Appena avrai accesso vedrai i post dei tuoi “compagni di istanza”, e quindi è molto importante scegliere un’istanza di persone che parlano la tua lingua, faciliterai la socializzazione.
Ultima cosa, ogni istanza ha il suo “credo”, la sua vocazione e le sue linee di comportamento, potremmo dire il suo manifesto, ed è molto più facile stare in un’istanza di persone che condividono i tuoi principi piuttosto che non entrare a caso e poi, eventualmente, spostare il proprio account più tardi in un’altra istanza (si, si può fare, ma perché non risolvere subito?).
In sostanza, controlla bene il “manifesto” dell’istanza a cui ti stai iscrivendo.
Ma bando alle ciance, ora basta con la filosofia!
Come ci si iscrive, come si fa?
Ora che sei un esperto/a del Fediverso, se mi hai seguito fino a qui, tutto diventa più facile.
Esistono siti che riportano elenchi di istanze dei vari social (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Friendica, Lemmy, Peertube). Eccone qualcuno:

Fai attenzione a questa pagina, però, perché i motori di ricerca possono facilmente portarti qui:
C’è un elenco (non esaustivo probabilmente) di istanze italiane, alcune addirittura locali. Personalmente ho scelto mastodon.uno perché ne condivido il manifesto.

Se decidi per Friendica, leggi bene le istruzioni a questa pagina e i termini d’uso, poi una volta iscritto, leggi per bene le istruzioni che ti verranno inviate. Sono utilissime, e seguirle ti aiuterà ad entrare prima nel “mood” della piattaforma”.
Nota: l’app ufficiale per android di Friendica sarebbe Raccoon, ma personalmente trovo che “Fedilab” sia fatta molto meglio.
Lemmy: un’interessante alternativa
Le istanze Lemmy italiane sono molto interessanti secondo me. Raccolgono tante Comunità (pensale come dei gruppi di Facebook) e in ogni comunità ogni giorno vengono inseriti e condivisi post inerenti notizie e novità di tutti i tipi, dalla politica, ai viaggi, ai fumetti, a tutto quello che ti passa per la testa.
